An NHL referee was caught red-handed rigging a game between the Lightning and the Canadiens after making a brutal decision.

Rare Goal by Canadiens' Kovacevic

While empty-net goals are common, one during the second period with the goalie in the net is rare. The Tampa Bay Lightning's misunderstanding led to the Canadiens' Jonathan Kovacevic scoring into the empty net.
This is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen.

The whistle never blows, music starts playing in the arena and Kovacevic recognizes that Johansson left the TBL net because he thought play was dead.

Insane goal.

The Lightning, upset, couldn't dispute as the referee didn't blow the whistle, allowing the goal.

New Angle Reveals Referee's Favoritism

An alternate angle shows the referee initially about to blow the whistle but then allowing Kovacevic to score in the empty net.
Confusion among Lightning players was due to music playing. Former goalie Mike McKenna explained players sometimes miss the whistle amid background noise.
"You know who's fault this is? The in-house DJ. Itchy finger on the jams. Started playing music despite not hearing a whistle.

Sometimes players can't hear the whistle on the ice. But the moment you hear music, you know play has stopped.

Eek"

While a fluke, the referee's favoritism and the free goal for the Canadiens raise ethical concerns. Luckily, the Lightning made a comeback, winning 4-3.
