Michael McNiven, former goalie of the Montreal Canadiens and several other organizations, has decided to retire at the young age of 27.

McNiven played seven years in North America, spending parts of five seasons with the Montreal Canadiens after signing an entry-level contract in 2015. He was traded to Calgary in 2022 for future considerations. His tenure there only lasted 19 days, after which the Ottawa Senators acquired him, also for future considerations. McNiven also spent a short time playing in France.
McNiven won't be abandoning hockey for good, as he has agreed to become the assistant coach of the Powell River Kings in the BCHL.
We are thrilled to announce the hirings of Christopher Klack and Michael McNiven as assistant coaches!
"My goal is to create an environment where our players have the best possible chance to succeed both mentally and physically." says McNiven "Having played in all three levels of professional hockey in North America, I am well versed in the demands and challenges our team will face. I am committed to bringing my utmost effort and expertise to win a Fred Page Cup."

McNiven's NHL career didn't go quite as planned, as he only ever played in part of one NHL game, and it was awful. The Canadiens were getting blown out, and Cayden Primeau was pulled out of his net and replaced by McNiven, who let in three goals in only seven shots. The Habs lost that game badly 8-2.
