Concern grows as Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman remains unsigned
The Boston Bruins still have not signed starting netminder Jeremy Swayman to a new contract, raising concerns among some fans of the team.
After all, we are heading into August and the team still has not found a way to secure the goalie to a new contract. Currently, Swayman is still under team control as an RFA but he will not be eligible to participate in team activities, including training camp, until he signs a new deal. Until then, he is still free to practice with his teammates privately. That being said, the clock is ticking as next season looms.
We are almost into August and there is still no contract for Swayman. Is it time to panic or does the wait solidify that he is here to stay. With little money left on the Bruins salary cap remaining there's just enough money to sign him to a deal.
Why have the Bruins failed to sign Swayman yet? It seems as though the main reason is money. The team currently has 8.6 million dollars in cap space. Typically, that would be more than enough to sign any goaltender. The only goalie that makes more than that currently is Andrei Vasilevskiy, although Connor Hellebuyck comes close with a cap hit of 8.5 million dollars. However, Bruins insider Kevin Paul DuPont believes that Swayman will have an average-annual-value higher than 9 million dollars on his next deal, which would mean the team would have to free up more space to sign him.

Swayman has played a total of 132 career regular-season NHL games. He was the starting goalie for 125 of those. He has a career record of 79-33-15 as well as a save percentage of .919 and a goals-against-average of 2.34. Last season he went 25-10-8 with a .916 save percentage and a 2.53 GAA.
