Patrick Roy has been rumored to be interested in coming back to the NHL as a head coach for some time now. Today though he finally did so in a shocking announcement that came out of nowhere.

Islanders Hire Roy As New Head Coach

The New York Islanders shocked everyone today when they announced that they had hired Patrick Roy as their next head coach, replacing Lane Lambert. The Islanders had not played particularly well to this point in the season, but also not poorly enough that a coaching change seemed to be close.
#Isles News: New York Islanders President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Lou Lamoriello announced today that Lane Lambert has been relieved of his coaching responsibilities. Patrick Roy has been named Head Coach of the New York Islanders.
The team is coming off four consecutive losses though, including a 4-3 OT loss to the 31st place Chicago Blackhawks last night. That must have been the last straw for the islanders.
Roy has plenty of experience In the NHL both as a player and coach. Not only is he one of the best goaltenders of all time, having the 3rd most wins after Marc-Andre Fleury passed him this season, but he also has a legitimate coaching career. He put up a 130-92-24 record behind the Avalanche bench including a Jack Adams award in the 2013-14 season. We will just have to see if he can replicate that success with the Islanders.
