This NHL insider has just revealed that a major trade nearly happened between these two Canadian teams, and it fell through for this surprising reason.
Elliotte Friedman Reveals The Oilers and Canadiens Nearly Made a Trade
The Edmonton Oilers were in panic mode at the beginning of the year, as they slid quickly to the basement of their division. The main focus, after the firing of their Head Coach, was goaltending. It was reported that they were searching the NHL goalie market to make a potential trade, and now Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that they were in talks with the Montreal Canadiens for goaltender Jake Allen.
"I really do think there was a time this year I thought Jake Allen was going to be in Edmonton, now I'm not convinced that's going to happen"
Friedman revealed that it was the cost that ultimately kept the Oilers from pulling the trigger on Allen. They were not willing to give up a draft pick, and even more that was required to have Montreal retain some of Allen's salary.
"I think what's happened there is that he's got a price that he's set, I think it's a draft pick," said Friedman.
"There's the trade price and then there's the retention price," admitted Friedman. "And the price gets higher if there's retention."
Oilers Happy In Hind Sight Given Skinner's Recent Performance
The Oilers can be happy they didn't panic during their slide, as they have pretty much fought their way out of it without selling off assets and acquiring a goaltender. In fact, Stuart Skinner has been great in the number 1 role, helping lead the Oilers to historic win streaks that has brought them from the bottom of the division.
We will see if the Oilers think they need to make any more moves at the deadline, or if they are willing to count on what they currently have in the room right now.
