The Philadelphia Flyers announced several big changes to their front office today, including the addition of fan-favorite forward Wayne Simmonds in an official role with the team.

Simmonds last played in the 2022-23 season where he appeared in 18 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs. After taking a full season off, he officially announced his retirement as a player at the end of last season. Now he appears to be continuing his career in hockey by joining the Flyers front office. NHL insider Chris Johnston quickly shared the news after the Flyers released it without much fanfare.
NBC sports reporter Jordan Hall also was quick to report the news, noting not only that the Flyers had hired Simmonds in an official capacity, but also that the team had made several other changes to their front office including in the scouting department.
The following is an excerpt from the Flyers announcement, which can be seen in full at NHL.com or through the post below. The team highlighted both his statistics as a player, as well as his efforts to participate in community events, something he was known for during his playing career. This likely played a significant role in their decision to make him a community relations ambassador.
Wayne Simmonds: Community Relations Ambassador & Hockey Operations Consultant

Wayne Simmonds joins the Flyers' staff for the first time since his playing career, having skated in eight of his 15 NHL seasons with Philadelphia (2011-19).

Off the ice, Simmonds was deeply involved in community work, founding "Wayne's Warriors" for military members and hosting "Wayne's Road Hockey Warriors" to give underprivileged children access to the game. Over his 15-year career with teams like Philadelphia, Nashville, and Toronto, Simmonds played 1,037 regular-season games, notching 526 points and 22 playoff points across 53 postseason contests.
Simmonds was always a fan favorite wherever he played. Now he will continue to be a favorite for Flyers fans as he works his way up the front office. Could we see him become a general manager or head coach one day? This seems like the direction he may be going in. We will just have to see how this situation develops in the coming years.
