Over the past few years, the Tampa Bay Lightning have managed to overcome many salary cap constraints to lead this team to two Stanley Cup's, but now, the cap may finally catch up to them.
A star on the way out?
On Tuesday, the team announced a long-term extension for forward Brandon Hagel, who landed on the team at the 2021-22 trade deadline, and it could have major effects for the rest of the organization.
The deal was for eight-years with a $6.5 per year value, and with just 10 forwards, 4 defenseman and one goaltender on the books next season, the team have just under $13 million left to put a complete team on the ice.
A franchise legend
What that may mean is the end of Lightning legend Steven Stamkos, who's current contract is $8.5 million AAV, and with his contract coming to an end after the 2023-24 season, it may be time over for him in Tampa Bay.
Obviously we've seen Tampa Bay work magic before en route to their two Stanley Cups, but at this point in time, it's tough to see a way they can give him a big new contract while filling out this roster and staying under the salary cap.
