The Tampa Bay Lightning are at risk of losing the franchise's best ever captain, and now, GM Julien Brisebois has commented on the negotiations.
After a stellar career in Tampa Bay,
Steven Stamkos is ready to hit the free agent market at 34-years of age, and it doesn't look like the Lightning are in a rush to get a deal done. The speculation about Stamkos' departure dates back to last summer, and now, the potential of the former No. 1 overall pick leaving the only home he's known in the NHL may become a reality.
Now, General Manager Julien Brisebois has commented on the ongoing negotiations, and while he reveals that the two sides are still talking, they're yet to come close on a new deal.
This certainly isn't promising with free agency just days away, and with teams ready to throw the bag at the veteran star, he could be on the way out. At 34, Stamkos had yet another fantastic campaign in 2023-24, netting 40 goals and adding 41 assists, and if a deal doesn't get done soon, he'll hit the open market.
Lots can change between now and July 1st, especially with the draft potentially changing plans going forward, but for now, unless there's a big shift, it appears Stamkos may be finding a new home for the 2024-25 season and beyond.
