Nick Ritchie, a former top-10 draft pick with 481 games played in the NHL for the Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Arizona Coyotes and Calgary Flames in the last eight years, chose to sign with Karpat in the SM-Liiga this season.
Ritchie had high expectations set on him when he joined the Finnish league. However, he has underperformed, scoring only five points in 10 games, and was recently handed an eight-game suspension.
Mikko Myllykoski, Karpat's sports director, shed light on the decision to part ways with him:
"Kärpät cannot offer Ritchie a big enough role in the team for the rest of the season, so he is free to look for a place to play elsewhere. When he came up, we knew he was a high risk/high reward style card that we thought was worth a look. However, he was not able to rise to the role that we would have needed him to play."
Many rumours about a potential return to the NHL emerged since the announcement was made.
Do you think he'll sign a deal in the NHL this season?
