Two years ago, Maple Leafs first round pick Rodion Amirov was diagnosed with a brain tumour, and tragically, he has now passed away.

A positive light

Despite his diagnosis, those around him would say Amirov continued to be a positive light to his friends, family and teammates, and was even working on a potential return to the ice one day.
It is we great sadness that we announce the passing of Rodion Amirov. Two years ago, Rodion was diagnosed with a brain tumour. From the moment he received the news, he refused to speak in the negative, determined to enjoy every day, facing it with the same positive attitude he showed during his hockey career. We will always remember his courage, his desire, his will, his smile, all of the great things about him. We'd like to thank his doctors, who took great care of him. We'd like to thank the Toronto Maple Leafs and his KHL - Salavat Yulayev Ufa team. Both did everything possible to help in any way, do whatever was necessary for Rodion and the Amirov family. And we'd like to thank hockey fans all over the world who sent notes of encouragement and best wishes over the past two years. They meant so much to the Amirov family.
At the age of 21 however, he has tragically passed away after a tough two year battle, despite fighting with courage, strength and positivity.

A tragedy

Amirov was a first-round pick of the Maple Leafs back in 2020 due to his skill, determination and will on the ice, as well as the talent that made him a very attractive prospect.

We now send well wishes and condolences to the friends, teammates in the KHL and those in the Maple Leafs organization that knew him, as well as the family of Amirov. May he Rest in Peace.
