Leafs fans never get a day off when it comes to news regarding their favorite players and today's no different. A major bombshell was dropped yesterday regarding the update on Auston Matthews' contract negotiations, and the news is slightly concerning, to say the least.

Matthews Wont Commit to an Extension

During last night's game between Florida and Carolina, trusted NHL insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a massive update regarding Auston Matthews, stating that it's unlikely he agrees to a contract extension this summer.
"It doesn't appear likely that Auston Matthews will sign by July 1st." - Elliotte Friedman

With both Auston Matthews and William Nylander entering the final year of their contracts next season, and massive changes coming to both the Leafs' roster and their front office, it's no surprise their star players won't commit to a long-term extension.

Dubas' Fault?

Could it be possible that Matthews' unwillingness to sign an extension stems from the recent news of Kyle Dubas' firing? Dubas was the one who gave Matthews the contract he wanted and allowed him to walk right into unrestricted free agency.
Perhaps Matthews will butt heads with this new management, and decide to say goodbye to Toronto next offseason.
