After passing the 60-goal mark in 2021-22, many expected Matthews to do even better last year, but through injuries and struggles, he managed *just* 40 goals, the lowest of his career since the 2018-19 season.
In 2023-24 however, he's been back to his very best, posting 25 goals in just 28 games, putting him on pace for 73 on the season, something that hasn't happen since Alexander Mogilny way back in the 1992-93 season.
While 60-goals is seemingly a foregone conclusion if he can stay healthy, 73 goals would be an incredible achievement for the 26-year old, who may end up as one of the greatest goal scorers in the modern day NHL.
The Maple Leafs offense is humming as of late, with Matthews tallying nine multi-goal games this season, so while everything would have to come together perfectly to get 73, there's no reason to doubt him at this stage given all that we've seen over the past seven years.
