The Toronto Maple Leafs have not lived up to their expectations this season. Despite a career best season from William Nylander and Auston Matthews on pace for 70 goals the team is just holding onto the 3rd spot in the Atlantic division. Now one Leaf forward may have found himself on the outside.
Leafs Reporter Suggests Ryan Reaves May Be Done With Maple Leafs
The Leafs have not been playing their best lately with Ryan Reaves out of the lineup. However, the team's struggles are not due to Reaves's absence. With the emergence of Pontus Holmberg and Bobby McMann, Reaves has effectively lost his spot in the Leafs lineup. Leafs reporter Jonas Seigel thinks Reaves may have even played his last game with the team.
Grades for the Maple Leafs at the half — from GM Brad Treliving and head coach Sheldon Keefe to William Nylander, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Ryan Reaves:
The path to playing time feels even murkier now than before, what with the fourth line finding an identity with McMann in there alongside Gregor and Kämpf. The Rangers had similar issues with Reaves last season (they were filled in when he was out there) and eventually dealt him to Minnesota. Is there a market for him again with two more years left on his contract and his 37th birthday ahead later this week? Will he end up on waivers?
Seigel was rather blunt in his assessment of Reaves. Reaves was clearly not an NHL caliber player when he was playing with the Leafs earlier this season.
#Leafs morning skate is underway with Nick Robertson and Ryan Reaves both in extras grey.
This continues a trend we saw last season. Reaves was genuinely one of the worst players in the league according to publicly available analytics models.
Treliving To Blame For Reaves Contract
All of this is made worse by the fact that Brad Treliving agreed to a three-year contract with this player. It would be an embarrassment to the organization if he were to go on waivers just half a year into it.
Brad Treliving signed Ryan Reaves to a three year deal and everyone just stopped using their brains in regards to the Leafs.
His cap hit is just 1.45 million dollars meaning that most of it can be buried in the minors. That may very well become reality given the way Reaves has played this year. That being said, it does not excuse Brad Treliving to the fact that he signed him to a three-year deal. No one in their right mind would think that that was a good idea based on how Reaves had played in the last two seasons. He is a direct detriment to your team on the ice. Who knows how he could not have seen this coming.
