Few NHL players in recent seasons have consistently reached the elite level that Auston Matthews has attained. Naming him captain of the Maple Leafs this offseason, after all, reflects their belief in his being the cornerstone of the franchise.
As the 2024-25 season approaches, it'll once more be Auston Matthews who should provide the offense and leadership toward driving the team to a deep Stanley Cup Playoff run. With 60, 40, and 69 goals in the past three campaigns, he's cemented his status as one of the best goal-scorers in the league.
Today's practice, however, would give a little bit of cause for concern. Wearing his usual Number 34, Auston Matthews left the ice just 25 minutes into the on-ice session, which was the cause for Leafs' nation to be at least a little concerned.
While details are scarce, that he was able to skate off on his own is a minor cause for optimism. Still, an early exit from practice for the captain is cause for concern.
Carrying a good deal of the weight of expectation this season, the last thing Auston Matthews needs is an injury this close to the start of the campaign. If the injury proves to be serious, it would go a long way toward derailing the hopes the Maple Leafs have of finally ending their Stanley Cup drought in 2024-25.
