Despite being deep in a rebuild that looks incredibly promising, the San Jose Sharks tried out some interesting names this summer, with the most intriguing of all being controversial goaltender Aaron Dell. The 35-year old has garnered plenty of hatred online for his acts on the ice throughout his NHL career, particularly his hit on Drake Batherson that caused him to miss the All Star game two years ago.
Even so, the team decided to give him a PTO this summer, with his last NHL action also coming with the team during the 2021/22 campaign, with the veteran goaltender spending the last two years of action in the AHL, most recently with the Kings affiliate the Ontario Reign. Unfortunately for Dell, he has been cut from his tryout with the Sharks according to TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie, and given his age and his lack of recent experience in the NHL, it's very hard to see where he goes from here.
For the Sharks however, this isn't a hit to their goaltending stocks, as they currently have the pair of Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek at the NHL level, with top prospct Yaroslav Askarov waiting in the wings after he was acquired from the Nashville Predators. Ultimately, Dell just hasn't been effective at the NHL level for lengthy periods of time throughout his career, despite some solid numbers, and with an .898 save percentage and a 3.14 GAA in his last full season of AHL action, this could be the end of the line.
