At this current point, Matthews is on pace to easily surpass 70 goals on the season, so while 80 on his glove may mean something else, the link to a potential 80 goal campaign is obvious.
No player has tallied 80 or more since Brett Hull way back in the 1990-91 season, and with another hat-trick against the Anaheim Ducks, Matthews now has an incredible 48 goals in 52 games played.
On his current pace, Matthews would have the second greatest goal scoring season in NHL history being era-adjusted, and if he passes 80, he'll top the entire list.
Not only is Matthews having an amazing year, but he could end up having a better year than anyone ever has, more than Gretzky, Ovechkin, Hull and all of the greatest goalscorers in league history, so the next 30 games will be amazing to see.
