Auston Matthews has started 2023-24 on an incredible goal scoring pace, and now, it appears he's got a lofty goal in mind for the remainder of the year.

Auston Matthews chasing 80 goals?

During the latest Toronto Maple Leafs game, fans spotted something interesting on the glove of their favourite goal scoring machine.
heard it hear first, he doesn't want 70, he wants EIGHTY
At this current point, Matthews is on pace to easily surpass 70 goals on the season, so while 80 on his glove may mean something else, the link to a potential 80 goal campaign is obvious.

Auston Matthews looking to set NHL history

No player has tallied 80 or more since Brett Hull way back in the 1990-91 season, and with another hat-trick against the Anaheim Ducks, Matthews now has an incredible 48 goals in 52 games played.
On his current pace, Matthews would have the second greatest goal scoring season in NHL history being era-adjusted, and if he passes 80, he'll top the entire list.
The top era-adjusted scoring seasons in NHL history:

1. Brett Hull (90-91)
2. Auston Matthews (23-24)

This isn't just a great season from Auston Matthews. It's shaping up to be one of the greatest seasons by anyone, ever:
Not only is Matthews having an amazing year, but he could end up having a better year than anyone ever has, more than Gretzky, Ovechkin, Hull and all of the greatest goalscorers in league history, so the next 30 games will be amazing to see.
