Brandon Montour, a defenseman who played a crucial role in the Florida Panthers' Stanley Cup triumph, recently signed a hefty seven-year, $50 million contract with the Seattle Kraken. However, it turns out he was not far from potentially joining his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs.

In an interview with TSN, Montour acknowledged this local interest.
I obviously get that, especially now - just little things of me being up north right now, even my friends and neighbors have caught wind.

Brandon Montour ends his time with the Florida Panthers as a Stanley Cup champion. He was traded to Florida from Buffalo in 2021. From 2021-2024 he played in 239 #FlaPanthers games with 147 points (37 G, 110 A) & +33. In 61 playoff games he had 27 points (11 G, 16 A) & -2. #NHL
He explained that his agent handled talks with Toronto and other suitors:
There were conversations - you just look at their roster and look at yourself. For me, I saw the player that could help and it was intriguing in that week.

"A lot of us grew up watching the Leafs... It's a lot of fun playing against them in this arena. It's kind of a surreal moment."

Brandon Montour and Carter Verhaeghe, both Ontario natives, talk about what it's like playing (and winning 😉) against their childhood favorite team.
Ultimately Montour chose Seattle over a homecoming.
There were talks, but there's a lot that goes into it with family with what they need and what I need, business decisions and such. There were definitely talks - we were excited about it and thought about it, but there were tons of options, and we're obviously grateful for Seattle. We're excited about that experience and excited to get down there and get started, with you could say, a new organization.

Although Toronto missed out on Montour, they successfully added other key players from the Panthers' championship team: defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson to join new acquisition Chris Tanev and goaltender Anthony Stolarz to backup Joseph Woll.
