Both were not only exceptional players but even better people, and the entire hockey world has been paying their respects with 13 seconds of silence.
The Blue Jackets are set to honor the Gaudreau brothers in a meaningful way this season. They'll be adding special tributes on their helmets and jerseys, showing just how much they're remembered.
During the preseason, players will sport a blue helmet sticker with gray trim that reads "GAUDREAU." To make it even more special, there'll be two doves between the numbers 13 and 21-those were the numbers Johnny and Matthew wore throughout their careers.
Then, on Wednesday, September 25, before their first preseason home game against the St. Louis Blues, the team will hold a moment of silence to remember the brothers.
But last night, during the Leafs' preseason game against the Senators at Scotiabank Arena, a few fans chose to cheer during that moment. It wasn't the time for team chants, and it's disappointing they didn't show what the moment deserved.
On top of that, the Leafs fell short, losing 6-5 in overtime. The next game is at Canadian Tire Center on Thursday against the Senators, and hopefully, we'll see both better results on the ice and more respect in the stands.
