Utah Hockey Club Makes embarrassing Own-Goal Blunder in Franchise Debut
What a night for the Utah Hockey Club as they kicked off their inaugural season! Sure, it was just preseason, but when they faced off against the St. Louis Blues in Des Moines, it was the beginning of a new era.
Unfortunately, things started off rough. Just minutes into the game, Utah found themselves down 1-0 and had to pull the goalie due to a delayed penalty. That's when things took a wild turn. Forward Milos Kelemen tried to pass it back to the point, but the puck slipped past the defenseman's stick and rolled right into their own net!
That shows you can take the team out of the Arizona Coyotes, but you can't take the Coyotes out of the hockey club!
But don't worry, Utah got on the board for real just minutes later when Michael Carcone finished off a smooth 2-on-0.
Later, Dylan Guenther who just received an 8 year, $57.14 million extension last week gave Utah a 3-2 lead in the third period.
It's all good for a laugh because it's preseason, and none of this counts. The real firsts for Utah's franchise will kick off on October 8th in their regular-season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Despite the mishap, there's a lot of excitement surrounding this team. With the NHL considering them an expansion franchise after scooping up the Coyotes' roster and staff, expectations are high. General Manager Bill Armstrong has made some solid moves this offseason, bringing in guys like Mikhail Sergachev, John Marino, and Ian Cole to shore up the defense.
With stars like Logan Cooley, Clayton Keller, and Guenther leading the charge, fans are hopeful that this squad can turn things around and compete for a playoff spot in their first year.
