On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs added veteran goaltender Jon Gillies on a professional tryout contract.
Gillies, 30, last played in the 2022-23 season, where he made three appearances for the Columbus Blue Jackets, going 1-1-0 with a .864 save percentage and 4.57 goals-against average (GAA). In the AHL, he played in 15 games with the Tucson Roadrunners, earning an 8-2-0 record, with an .878 save percentage and 3.70 GAA.
Originally drafted 66th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2012 NHL Draft, Gillies was a large reason Providence College won the 2015 NCAA championship and was named the Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player. He made his NHL debut on April 6, 2017, against the Los Angeles Kings in a 4-1 win, stopping 27 shots.
On the international stage, Gillies backstopped the U.S. to gold at the 2013 World Junior Championships. The Concord, New Hampshire native has totaled 35 career NHL games between the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, New Jersey Devils, and Blue Jackets.
