The signing of Jani Hakanpaa in Toronto was in jeopardy due to injury, but now that he's expected back, the veteran defenseman has broken his silence.
The 2024 off-season has been a whirlwind for the Toronto Maple Leafs, with the team adding three solid defenseman to boost their blue line group heading into yet another crucial campaign. One of those players brought plenty of drama with them already however, as speculation soon began that Jani Hakanpaa would not be able to continue his career after signing in Toronto due to a previous knee injury.
Those fears have seemingly been put to rest in recent times, and now, the former Dallas Stars blue liner has opened up on the situation that dominated headlines in Toronto this summer.
"In my mind, It's been clear that I'm going to get back... it's a little bit of a roller-coaster almost. There's good days, bad days, but I think that underlying trust that it's going to happen eventually has always been there"

Despite the reports, Hakanpaa makes it clear that he was full of confidence that he'd always get back on the ice, finishing off his comments by revealing how far away he is from a return to the ice officially.
"Hopefully as fast as possible. You're itching. You're itching at this time. We put a lot of work into all of that so we're getting close but now just put the finishing touches on it & get back out there"
At this point in time, all signs are pointing to a healthy Jani Hakanpaa in 2024 for the Maple Leafs, and if that's the case, they'll have more depth than any of their teams over the past few seasons, and it may serve them very well in their quest for a Stanley Cup.
