It's incredible how much pressure athletes face from the media and fans. They're expected to perform at their peak, even when dealing with stuff that others would get a pass on. So, when Sheldon Keefe kept quiet about Auston Matthews' health issues, fans and media panicked, only to learn it was just food poisoning.
Matthews is not currently on the bench with food poisoning according to the TNT broadcast.
Keefe didn't say much when asked about his superstar today.
For whatever reason, it's not one of those run-of-the-mill everyday type of illnesses that sort of come and go. This one has lingered. The affects have lingered and gotten worse when he gets on the ice and is asserting himself.
But it's nobody's business what Matthews is going through. We should be wishing him a speedy recovery and good health.
Sure, the timing might seem a bit fishy to some. And as fans, maybe we should give him space.
Yes, it's unfortunate his season could be over if he can't go in game 5 and Toronto is eliminated at TD Garden on Tuesday. Yet having Matthews healthy and playing his best should be the top priority, especially in the grand scheme of things.
