When the Leafs snatched Cade Webber from the Carolina Hurricanes at the end of last season's trading deadline, one thing was instantly apparent: this fellow is huge. Only 23 years young, Webber stands at 6'7", 208 pounds, an absolute giant on the ice. And when Leafs fans learned of his reputation as a top-tier defensive defenceman in the NCAA, well, the hype surrounding him just started to build and build.
This past weekend, Webber attended the 2024 Prospects Showcase in Montreal, and the former Boston University star did not disappoint. Per the latest from Pension Plan Puppets, he was one of the biggest surprises for the Leafs.
Although Webber wasn't exactly renowned during his college days for running up the score, he did manage some surprisingly strong offensive skills during the showcase and even had an assist on one of Sunday's goals by Roni Hirvonen.
Now that training camp is in full gear, all eyes will be on Cade Webber to see if he can impress enough to land a spot in the NHL or start the year down with the AHL. The smart money's probably on him starting in the Marlies, but given his size and defensive knack, anything is possible for him.
