The Toronto Maple Leafs are the biggest team in the NHL, and sometimes that can work in their favour, but other times, it certainly isn't a positive for the organization.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the latter occurred during the Morgan Rielly suspension hearing, as the league were reportedly set to announce a 2-3 game suspension, until the media coverage forced their hand.
Dregger on Overdrive just said again that he has talked to people around the league, and there are some that think Rielly was in line for a 2 or 3 game suspension. But the amount of coverage it got made the league up it to 5 so as to not be perceived as soft on Toronto.... 🤔🤷🏻♂️

The truth on this report may never be known, but given that this was Rielly's first major offense, there is certainly something to the report that this was the NHL making a statement against their accused bias for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Morgan Rielly to serve a five-game suspension
On the surface, the cross-check to the face of Ridley Greig was a terrible move from the veteran defenseman from the Maple Leafs, but given that it was his first offense, many believed he'd get off with a shorter punishment.
It's tough to say whether the league was right or wrong for how they handled the situation, but with the reported leak before telling the team and now them needing to take a stand against perceived bias, you can bet that Maple Leafs fans will be watching intently for consistency from the league on such issues going forward.
