It has just been revealed that Auston Matthews was playing through a bit of an illness during game 3 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, which is more bad news for Leaf fans as they head into game 4.
For the Toronto Maple Leafs to succeed this postseason, they need to be healthy. That has proven to be one of the larger challenges for the team this year. William Nylander is yet to play in the series against the Bruins with an undisclosed suspected upper-body injury, which has been a major blow to the Leafs scoring and powerplay.
Now, it has been revealed that Auston Matthews isn't playing at 100% either, and played through an illness during game 3. This is the reason he missed the morning skate for the Leafs, according to Chris Johnston.
"The Leafs should also have top-line center Auston Matthews back in better health after he played through an illness during Wednesday's 4-2 loss. That explains why he was the only regular to miss the morning skate at Scotiabank Arena — opting instead for more rest — and helps account in part for a night when he didn't look like his usual explosive self though still logging another 23-plus minutes."
Despite this, Matthews still looked like one of the best Leafs on the ice last night, leading the team in hits with 8 and attempting 7 shots.
Auston Matthews reportedly played through Game 3 with an "illness" and is still recovering from it.
Despite this, Matthews was arguably still the Leafs' best player last night.
This extra day off could not have come at a better time for the Leafs, as they will benefit from having the time to rest their best player and hopefully, the extra time will allow William Nylander to get healthy enough to suit up for game 4.
