John Tavares has been with the Maple Leafs for six seasons now, and according to the former captain, he wants that stint to go for much, much longer.

After a wild off-season, the Maple Leafs are returning for training camp, but with two of their biggest names set for free agency, the drama and the speculation likely won't stop anytime soon. One of those names is former captain John Tavares, who has been commended on the way he has handled the stripping of that captaincy, with the team ultimately giving the C to Auston Matthews this off-season.

On the first day of camp, the veteran forward was asked about his future, and unsurprisingly, he wants to remain with his home town team and help them break their lengthy Stanley Cup drought.

"Obviously I want to be here. I want to be here long term. Hopefully that happens."

It's unclear at this point if conversations have been had about extending Tavares, with the 33-year old set for free agency a year from now, but given his love for the team, Brad Treliving would no doubt love to keep him around. A potential deal seems much more likely than with the other impending free agent in Mitch Marner, but the 2024/25 campaign may play a big role in answering questions about the future for both players, so look for big time performances from both this season.
