One of the intriguing updates is the expansion of the Coach's Challenge to include delay of game penalties for shooting the puck over the glass. Now, if a puck goes out of play, but it's determined to have deflected off a player, stick, or the boards, the infraction can be rescinded.
However, this rule doesn't work both ways. You can only challenge to get rid of a penalty, not to call one that was missed. Yet if the coaches challenge fails, the team gets an additional two-minute minor on top of the original penalty.
There are also some big changes around line changes and face-offs. If a defensive team dislodges the net, they're no longer allowed to make a line change before the face-off that follows. And if there's an icing call, the center on the offensive side will only get one warning for a faceoff violation, same as the defending team's center.
Lastly, the league is buckling down on players and team staff sitting on the boards. After one warning from the officials, the next time they're caught doing it, the team will receive a bench minor penalty.
All changes have already been approved by the NHL Board of Governors, and while the exact language might still get tweaked, it's clear the league is continuing to fine-tune the game.
