After taking the entire 2023-24 season off, it was yet to be seen which way Alexander Edler's professional hockey career would go. However, well over a year since he last played in the league, Edler has made up his mind.
Per an announcement on the Canucks' official site, Alex Edler will ink a one-day contract with the team in October, in order to retire as a Canuck. The team will recognize Edler with a special pre-game ceremony before their contest with the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday, October 11th.
Edler spoke to the media and expressed how meaningful it is for him to retire with the Canucks, who drafted him in 2004 and for whom he has played 15 seasons.
The 38-year-old Edler finishes an elite career with 439 points including 104 goals and 335 assists, along with 733 penalty minutes in 1,030 regular-season games. He played in 93 playoff contests and chipped in 40 points. Most importantly, he was one of the key members of the Canucks run which took them all the way to the 2011 Stanley Cup Final before bowing out to the Boston Bruins, 4-3 in seven games.
We'd like to take a moment to appreciate Alexander Edler on a great career in the NHL and wish him the best in retirement.
