Last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs tried William Nylander at center, and while it was a big move at the time, he ultimately moved back to the wing, having a career year alongside John Tavares. With new Head Coach Craig Berube coming in, the topic has been brought up once more, and now he has confirmed that Nylander will be moved down the middle once more to start the 2024/25 season.
Even more surprising is the wing pairing that Berube announced alongside No. 88, as Berube revealed that Max Domi will be sharing a line with him, rather than rejoining Auston Matthews on the top line after the duo had plenty of success a season ago.
Given the uncertain future of John Tavares, the Maple Leafs needed to fill the 2C role permanently this summer, and with the size and the skillset of Nylander, he has always been the perfect candidate, with speculation brewing around this move for weeks.
It's unclear how the rest of the Maple Leafs lineup will shake out at this point, with Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies likely to take their place on the top line alongside Auston Matthews, but with a new coach, the team are clearly trying new things, so we will see if it can work this time.
