The Toronto Maple Leafs fan base collectively held their breath on Tuesday, as captain Auston Matthews departed practice after just 25 minutes, with many fans fearing the worst for their superstar centre.
Fortunately, the first update on his situation came from Craig Berube, who quickly revealed that Matthews was dealing with an 'upper body ailment', and that it was nothing serious, a revelation that came as a major relief to many in and outside the organization. However, on Wednesday, according to reporter Mark Masters, Matthews missed practice, signalling that while it may still not be a serious injury, it might be a bit worse than originally anticipated.
The regular season is still over two weeks away for the Maple Leafs, so there's no worry yet about No. 34 not being available on the first night of a highly anticipated season, but if the injury continues to keep him out of practice, then fans will begin getting seriously worried.
Last season, the now Maple Leafs captain skated in 81 of 82 games, competing in over 70 per year in the last three seasons, so he has managed to stay relatively injury free throughout his career, with this latest update the first sign of worry in quite some time about his health. Still, the superstar forward has tallied 169 goals over the last three seasons, and remains one of the greatest goal scorers the NHL has ever seen, and if he's healthy along with the added responsibility of being captain, this team has a great chance to finally expel some demons and make a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
