The Maple Leafs tried plenty of different things in 2023/24, but after finding magic with Max Domi and Auston Matthews, that must continue in 2024/25.
After years of success with the Auston Matthews/Mitch Marner line combination in Toronto, the team were forced to try something different last season, and it may end up being a blessing in disguise. During this time, it was Max Domi that joined the first line alongside Auston Matthews, and the two immediately clicked, with Domi bringing the much needed grit to the top line.
Not only that, but Matthews production stayed consistent with Domi alongside him, with the son of Maple Leafs icon Tie Domi recording a solid 11 points in 14 games in a career best stretch in March alongside No. 34. Now, Editor in Leaf have called for the combination to remain in 2024/25, with Domi struggling to make much of a contribution on his own last year, and even with the calls for him to be the 3C, the lineup has much more depth with Domi on the top line.
With Mitch Marner's contract up next summer, this may result in a disgruntled Marner, who has always preferred to play alongside Matthews, but with Domi on the top line and a combination of McMann-Nylander-Marner on the second line, it gives Toronto much needed scoring depth. New Head Coach Craig Berube has yet to make any indications as to where the lineup combinations are heading in 2024/25, but if Domi replicates his success alongside Matthews, it makes this team much, much better in their pursuit of a Stanley Cup.
