The Toronto Maple Leafs have long underperformed in the playoffs, so perhaps the answer, according to one reporter could be signing Sidney Crosby.

After years of coming up short in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a huge change behind the bench this off-season, adding former Stanley Cup winning coach Craig Berube. If that isn't enough however, 2025 free agency will be crucial, with the team potentially losing both Mitch Marner and John Tavares, and one reporter has now suggested a major swap that could change the landscape of the NHL as we know it.
«If [Crosby] is going to wait it out, play his final year, and hit free agency next year, [then he should sign with] the Toronto Maple Leafs — it doesn't get bigger than that in the hockey world,» Hayes said. «Maybe the greatest Canadian captain of all time, or real close to it, with Wayne Gretzky, with Mark Messier, with Mario Lemieux.

«One of the great winners of all time. Golden goal in 2010. Come home, come to Canada, end the Canadian Cup drought as a Maple Leaf. [John] Tavares leaves, Sid comes in. It all works out for everybody.»
If things don't go better in 2024, Bryan Hayes has suggested the team instead opt to land Sidney Crosby in free agency, using him to replace John Tavares in a move that could make them Stanley Cup contenders. There's still a long way to go until the summer of 2025, with many things potentially changing between now and then, but if Brad Treliving could pull that off, he'd be hailed as a hero in Toronto.
