The Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked to several different defensemen heading into the trade deadline. One target they are reportedly pursuing is defenseman Matt Dumba. A new interview with Dumba has revealed that the Maple Leafs tried to sign him and he turned them down.

Dumba Reveals Why He Turned Down The Maple Leafs During Free Agency

In a new interview with Matt Dumba yesterday he spoke about the upcoming trade deadline. Dumba was asked about Toronto as a destination and revealed that they were a team he talked to during free agency. According to Dumba one of the main factors that put the Coyotes ahead of the Maple Leafs at the time was the fact that he owned a house in Arizona.
Matt Dumba says, yes, the Toronto Maple Leafs were one of several teams that expressed interest in him during free agency.

That he already owned an investment home in Arizona played into his decision to sign with the Coyotes.
Dumba then confirmed where he believes his future will take him not just for the rest of this season but next season as well.

Dumba Confirms His NHL Future For The First Time

In the same interview, Dumba went on to talk about what he is expecting this offseason to look like. From Dumba's point of view, he expects to be a free agent again and to go through the process again.
«I'm sure I'll be going through that again this summer.»

With this quote from Dumba this likely means he is not open to signing an extension with any team he is traded to at the trade deadline. This is something Maple Leafs front office members will need to consider Dumba is likely nothing more than a rental.
If the Maple Leafs do trade for Dumba they will need to hope for his offensive game to come back. This season in Arizona has been a major step back in that regard. If they can get his offensive upside back he could be a great addition.
