If there is one major difference in the Leafs between this season and last season, it is the toughness and grit that runs up and down the lineup. Sure, the Leafs have always had their enforcer on the fourth line, but that player would struggle to stay in the lineup, let alone to get on the ice to protect players. Now, however, the Leafs have that in Max Domi.
The other night, Simon Nemac and Auston Matthews got into a bit of a scuffle on the sideboards, to which Max Domi took exception. Domi immediately dropped the gloves with Nemac, landing a lot of shots on the rookie.
To say fighting doesn't matter is just wrong, as it does mean something to the players on the team. After the fight, Auston Matthews discussed with the media what it meant to him to see Domi step up and drop the gloves for him, even if it might not have been necessary.
Hopefully, this translates into the playoffs for the Leafs, who have historically struggled in this area of the game in the postseason.
