The Toronto media is famously not kind to their players, and on Saturday, Mitch Marner called them out over their unfair criticism of Ilya Samsonov.

Mitch Marner is set to make his return to the Toronto Maple Leafs today, and in an interview, he wasted no time getting acquainted with the Toronto media once more. After harsh criticisms of him and other players, Marner decided to call out the media, especially for their harsh treatment of goaltender Ilya Samsonov during his struggles this season.
"Just like I spoke on before, I mean, I know I've said a lot of times, you guys are not kind to some people sometimes. And stuff gets said about a lot of people during tough stretches or tough moments and obviously that doesn't define one person. And what Ilya has done from coming back from the start of the season and just really taking us back into a great position, being the backbone of this team. It's been phenomenal and amazing to see."

Unsurprisingly, the media have already hit back with a negative article about Marner by calling his criticisms of the media and their 24/7 crusade to seemingly target the entire team 'tiresome'. Sure, was Samsonov worthy of criticism this year? Absolutely. But in the media cycle that has been created in Toronto, they've once again taken it too far, and every year in free agency, it's not a shock that players take that into account, with Radko Gudas the perfect example in recent times.
It's the media's job to talk about players, and sometimes it's hard not to be negative, but this group just takes it way too far, so it's good for everyone to see Mitch Marner calling them out.
