Auston Matthews has just made his intentions very clear about how he intends to proceed long-term with the Leafs: he wants to be here forever.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares was the one who broke the news to Auston Matthews that he would be the next captain of the team. Tavares supposedly picked up the phone to call Matthews and tell him. Matthews gladly accepted and will become the first ever American captain of the franchise.
"I got chills, honestly," said Matthews of the call

Auston Matthews was asked about his future with the team during Wednesday's captaincy press conference, and he said that despite the fact he only has a four year deal he's beginning this upcoming season, he wants to be with the team for a lot longer than that, possibly his entire career.
"Well, I mean, I think that's the goal, is to be a Leaf for life. To win here, with my teammates, for this city. Those are always things that you kind of keep in the back of your mind. But they're also things that are kind of in the future as well.

I've loved every minute of being a Toronto Maple Leaf. Like I said, it's such a tremendous honour and you kind of take it one day at a time, but I hope that's the case."
Auston Matthews has made one thing very clear, he will stop at nothing to bring the Stanley Cup to the city of Toronto for the first time since 1967. He will now have the "C" on his jersey to be able to lead the charge in that quest.
Last season was a fantastic one for Auston Matthews, as he finished with 69 goals and 107 points in 81 games.
