Whether or not the Toronto Maple Leafs will trade Mitch Marner has become the story of the offseason, leading to wild fan proposed trades including the Leafs star winger.
One team Marner has been linked to more than others seemingly is the Nashville Predators. Predators general manager Barry Trotz did scoff at the idea when asked about it after the Ryan McDonagh trade, but it still seems like a likely trade destination.
I asked Barry Trotz if he'd be interested in acquiring Mitch Marner, with now some $25 million in cap room.
His response is pretty hilarious and he shrugged it off as «just rumors.»
As a result, many fans have proposed trades between the teams. Many focus on Predators goaltender Jusse Saros as the main piece coming back. After all, the Leafs will be without Ilya Samsonov next season and they need a reliable veteran netminder to mentor Joseph Woll. In this particular proposal, Saros would be coming to the Leafs along with Jeremy Lauzon in return for Marner.
It might seem like a risky move and certainly has the possibility of backfiring. As such, that return might seem underwhelming to many Leafs fans. However, it certainly is not as underwhelming as on proposed trade with the Anaheim Ducks that would see Marner traded for Trevor Zegras, one-for-one.
Luckily for us, not all the proposed trades were so unlikely. One trade with the Utah HC actually saw both sides get a package they might enjoy. In the scenario, Marner is traded for Josh Doan, Sean Durzi, and a 2024 1st round pick.
For Utah, they would immediately get a face of the franchise type player. For an organization that is just beginning, that is a huge get. Losing Josh Doan doesn't hurt as bad now that they are officially not the Coyotes, and Sean Durzi had a sneaky-good year last season. Through in the 1st round pick and we have a trade that both teams might actually like.
That Utah trade looks fantastic in my eyes because you get a good top 4 defense in durzi along with a promising prospect it josh doan plus a 1st round pick which would probably be a top 10 pick
If Marner is traded though, the return likely won't look like any of these proposals at all. Be sure to stay tuned with the Leafs to see how they handle their star winger this offseason, heading into a contract year.
