This comment comes after the team lost to the very mediocre New York Islanders 3-2 on Monday. Following the game though, just four points separate the Leafs and Islanders despite the fact that Toronto clearly has a much more talented lineup. The Leafs do have two games in hand on the Islanders, but that does not make up the difference in where the Leafs should be.
Considering the Roster that the Leafs have, they should not be worried about earning a top-three spot in the Atlantic division. Following the loss to the Islanders though, the team sits 4th in the division, one point back of the Lightning with two games in hand on them. Meanwhile, the Lightning are 8-2 over their last ten games while the Leafs are just 4-5-1. With the teams trending in opposite directions, the Leafs could be in serious danger of falling into a wild-card spot.
