The Toronto Maple Leafs made some blue line additions in free agency, but now their dream target in MacKenzie Weegar may now be available from Calgary.

While the Maple Leafs have already added Chris Tanev, Jani Hakanpaa and Oliver Ekman-Larsson in free agency, the blue line could still do with some improving, and now Brad Treliving may finally have his dream target. According to reports, MacKenzie Weegar, who Treliving acquired in Calgary in the Huberdeau-Tkachuk deal may be available, with the team pushing for a rebuild in the coming years.
MacKenzie Weegar is a player to keep an eye on. 30 year old defenseman playing elite level hockey with 20 goals and 52 points last year. On an incredibly palatable 6.25m AAV contract until 2028. A player Calgary could get a great return for, and many teams would kill to have 👀
Nothing about a potential deal here would be cheap however, as Weegar carries a $6.25 million AAV deal for the next seven years, and after a career year that saw him score 20 goals, third amongst defenseman in the NHL, Calgary will be asking a lot. With their considerable salary cap space, Craig Conroy and the Flames may be open to taking a contract back for Toronto, but in exchange, it could potentially cost them a player like Nick Robertson, Easton Cowan, Fraser Minten or a combination of multiple.
Ultimately, there's no guarantee that the Flames trade Weegar, but after moving out Nikita Zadorov, Noah Hanifin, Jacob Markstrom, Tyler Toffoli, Elias Lindholm and the newest Leaf in Tanev, it would make sense, and the Maple Leafs are the perfect team to chase him via trade.
