Earlier today, captain Auston Matthews left practice after spending only a few minutes on the ice with his teammates. He went into the locker room and never returned.
Mark Masters shared the following video of his exit on X:
After practice, head coach Craig Berube revealed details on the captain's health, saying that he has an upper-body injury, but it's "nothing serious."
Per David Alter:
We're glad to know that "nothing serious" will bother Matthews a few weeks before his first official season as the Leafs' captain. He clearly has big goals going into the season, and we'd hate to see him unable to achieve them because of an injury.
Last season, he missed only one game and fell just one goal short of the 70-goal mark. If he can remain healthy all year, we have no trouble picturing him scoring over 70 goals.
Teams like to avoid taking risks with their star players, especially in the pre-season. While Matthews played in the Leafs' first game against the Ottawa Senators, he won't be in the lineup tonight against the same Sens, in Ottawa.
Berube decided to send out younger members of the organization, such as Easton Cowan, Jacob Quillan, Nikita Grebenkin, Marshall Rifai, and Matthew Knies.
As for the Senators, they have decided to bring out top players Tim Stutzle, Brady Tkachuk, Claude Giroux, and Jake Sanderson.
An interesting matchup awaits us tonight, and we should be able to enjoy it knowing that Auston Matthews' injury isn't concerning.
