Trade proposal shows Leafs trading Mitch Marner to Rangers for Jacob Trouba

The Blueshirts want to get rid of Captain Jacob Trouba and his $8.5 million cap hit while the Maple Leafs seek a partner for Mitch Marner and his expiring contract which has a $10.9 million price tag. A recent trade proposal shows the two sides could potentially help each other out.

GM Chris Drury and the Rangers still need a top-line right winger to play alongside Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad, while Brad Treliving and the Maple Leafs are looking to add depth on the blueline after adding Chris Tanev and Stanley Cup champion from the Florida Panthers, Oliver-Ekman-Larsson in NHL free agency.

For this trade to happen, both players would need to agree to the move. Marner has a full no-move clause in his contract, and Trouba has a 15-team no-trade list, which would need to exclude Toronto.

If the trade goes through, the Leafs would gain $3.8 million in cap space, yet the Rangers would take on the difference in the players' salaries which means they're losing $2.4 million. That's a serious problem for the Blueshirts.

Even though New York has $5.1 million in cap space, they still may resign defenseman Ryan Lindgren who's likely to command between $4-$4.5 million in arbitration.

So it's likely some other move would need to transpire like trading Kaapo Kakko and his $2.4 million cap hit before this trade could take place.

Should this trade go down, questions about Trouba's replacement on the Rangers blueline would arise in New York, while rumors of John Tavares losing his captaincy would intensify with a new one coming to Toronto.
