The Utah Hockey Club are months away from their first official action, and it appears they're ready to trade a former top pick to make their playoff push happen.
The 2024 NHL Draft was full of shocks and surprises, but none were bigger than the move made by Bill Armstrong, who gave up the talented JJ Moser to land star defenseman Mikhail Sergachev. On top of that, they added John Marino to their blue line that already included names such as Sean Durzi and Juuse Valimaki, and now it's made some names expendable.
The biggest among them will be the 2019 first-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes Victor Soderstrom, who has managed just 53 games in the NHL over the past four years with the now defunct team. According to a recent report, the team are exploring all options ahead of their first season, with Soderstrom, the RFA likely to be moved.
"Also hearing that while Utah is open to re-signing RFA D-man Victor Söderström, the team is also exploring trades for the 2019 11th overall pick.
Söderström, 23, has yet to establish any kind of NHL foothold, totaling 53 NHL games (1 G, 11 pts.) over the past three seasons." Morgan said.
The 23-year old still has plenty of potential and will continue to improve as he gets more experience, but given what Utah HC are clearly trying to build, it makes total sense for them to move on from Soderstrom, a player they have little connection too.
