Alex Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, was participating in the very first drill of the team's skate when he had to leave the ice in major pain.
After completing his warm-up and joining the team's first drill, Ovechkin suddenly pulled up and appeared to be in some discomfort. He quickly headed to the bench, where he got a supportive pat on the back before going to the locker room.
He hasn't returned to the ice, while the rest of the group moved on to a scrimmage on the other rink. It's unclear if he's injured or if this will affect his participation in Thursday's opening day of training camp. Veterans have off-ice testing and physicals scheduled for Wednesday.
Alex Ovechkin turns 39 on Tuesday and is gearing up for his 20th NHL season. He recently came back to the U.S. after training in Russia during the offseason. With 843 career goals, he's just 42 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record.
