The Toronto Maple Leafs will face a tough dilemma concerning their standout prospect Easton Cowan.
Must read on Daily Hockey Dose
Cowan had an amazing season last year with the London Knights, tallying 96 points in 54 regular season games, as well as 34 points in 18 playoff games. It's safe to say that he's ready to compete at the next level. Unfortunately, it's not that simple.
At 19 years old, Cowan isn't eligible to play in the AHL, as players can only compete in this league if they're 20 years old or have spent four seasons in junior.
This means that unless he plays with the Maple Leafs in the NHL, he'll need to spend another season in the OHL.
He has already proven that he's too good for the OHL but could fall short of making the Leafs' lineup this season.
A tough decision awaits general manager Brad Treliving, but if Cowan continues to play well in training camp, the better option would arguably be for him to start the year in the NHL.
Even if it could be hard for him to adjust to a bottom-six role, the forward could reach a new level in the NHL. However, the Leafs are ready to win, and their priority is not developing players but using developed players to win games and reach the Stanley Cup playoffs.
This situation will be interesting to monitor. Make sure to stay tuned to get the latest updates about the Leafs and Cowan.
