The Winnipeg Jets have been looking to make some big moves this summer, and now we know of one that reportedly fell apart at the draft.
The 2024 NHL Draft was full of twists, turns and major blockbusters, and according to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press, there was almost another that took place. His report has revealed that on draft night, the Jets began talks with the Washington Capitals surrounding 23-year old forward Connor McMichael, with the likely piece to return in a deal being disgruntled forward Rutger McGroarty.
"There was some chatter around the 2024 NHL Draft that the Jets and Capitals were considering a deal that involved centre Connor McMichael. McMichael is under contract for two more seasons at $2.1M and then will be a restricted free agent. McMichael was bumped down the depth chart with the arrival of former Jets centre PL Dubois." Wiebe said.
Ultimately though, no deal ever came to fruition, with the Jets yet to make a significant move this summer that could push their Stanley Cup hopes further along as they still look to the trade market and available free agents. As for the Capitals, it makes sense that they would look to unload a promising young player for a more win-now piece, so don't expect either of these two teams to stop looking for upgrades with two months before the 2024/25 regular season begins.
