The Arizona Coyotes have fired shots at the Montreal Canadiens for their seemingly poor drafting.
Coyotes Taunt First Overall Pick
Last night, the Arizona Coyotes faced off against the Montreal Canadiens in a thrilling match. The game featured Juraj Slafkovsky, the Canadiens' first overall pick, and Logan Cooley, the Coyotes' third overall pick.
The game ended with a 3-2 victory for the Coyotes, with Logan Cooley contributing a point. What happened after the game raised eyebrows when the Coyotes' social media team teased the Canadiens.
Since being drafted, Logan Cooley and Juraj Slafkovsky have shown significantly different levels of performance, sparking a debate about who deserved to be the first-overall pick.
Trajectories Since Being Drafted
After being selected first and third overall respectively, the two have had near polar opposite trajectories. In his first year after being drafted, Slafkovsky made the immediate jump to the NHL where he scored 4 goals and 10 points in 39 games before getting injured. He has had a slow start to his second NHL season with only one assist in 10 games and there is currently discourse on if he should be sent to the AHL.
Cooley on the other hand was given a year to develop in the NCAA where he was a Hobey Baker award finalist alongside 2023 3rd overall pick Adam Fantilli and linemate Matthew Knies. Cooley scored 22 goals and 60 points in 39 NCAA games leading his team in scoring. He also played in the World Junior Championships where he scored 7 goals and 14 points in 7 games for Team USA. He has not skipped a beat since making the NHL scoring a goal and 7 assists for 8 points through his first 10 games.
For comparison, Slafkovsky is on pace for 8 points this entire season while Cooley has already scored 8 points through his first 10 games. While it is unlikely Slafkovsky keeps up this terrible point pace, it certainly leaves a lot to be desired.
We will now wait and see how the two teenagers' careers pan out and which will have established themselves as the player that should have gone first overall.
