After not playing professional hockey since 2020 Ilya Kovalchuk may be eyeing a return to hockey.

Kovalchuk Teases Major Career Announcement

Ilya Kovalchuk a legend in both the KHL and NHL has just released a statement regarding his playing career.
"I have not officially finished my career. The last match is definitely not my thing. If you go out, you need to play, help the team. We will communicate first of all with the head coach of Spartak, Alexei Zhamnov, to understand what are the tasks and interests, so that it will primarily benefit the team. The decision on the contract will be within two weeks," - Ilya Kovalchuk, Sports24.ru
Kovalchuk has not played professional hockey since the 2020-21 season, where he win the KHL's Gagarin Cup with Avangard Omsk.
While Kovalchuk has not played for Spartak Moscow in the KHL, he did come up through the team's youth system.
The legendary player has had a prolonged career that has seen him bounce from the NHL and KHL.

Kovalchuk's Legendary Career

Kovalchuk has been playing professional for 25 seasons combined in the NHL and the KHL. He was drafter first overall in the 2001 draft by the Atlanta Thrashers.

Kovalchuk played a total of 926 NHL games with 443 goals and 876 points as a member of the Atlanta Thrashers, New Jersey Devils, LA Kings, Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals.
The now 40-year-old forward had a 5 year span where he left the NHL to go play for St. Petersburg SKA before rejoining the NHL.
Kovalchuk has 378 games in the KHL since 2001 and in that span he has 170 goals and 398 total points in that span.
He last played in the 2020-21 season with the Avangard Omsk where he won the championship.
