Today on TSN's Insider Trading, NHL insider Pierre Lebrun talked about one of the hottest topics in the league in recent years, expansion. After Kevin Weeks posted that the league was looking into potential expansion cities such as Atlanta, expansion has become the hot topic around the league once again. During the Insider Trading segment, LeBrun confirmed most of Week's points.
LeBrun confirmed that the NHL is actively looking to continue expanding. All of the major cities that have been theorized by fans as expansion spots have now been confirmed to be in discussion with the NHL. The list of cities he gave us does include a somewhat new option in Atlanta. Atlanta, of course, has already had an NHL franchise once before but the city typically hasn't been included in expansion rumors nearly as often as cities like Houston, Salt Lake City, and Quebec City.
If the league were to revisit Atlanta, they would need to find a way to get a new building constructed. This was ultimately the problem that got the Thrashers relocated last time the league tried to establish itself in the peach state.
