Three on three overtime hockey in the NHL is one of the more exciting versions of regular season hockey. However, the league is reportedly looking into changing the rules for the extra frame.

NHL Insider Confirms League Is Looking To Change Overtime Rules

NHL insider and ESPN reporter Greg Wyshynski reported recently that the NHL is looking into changing the rules in overtime in an effort to reduce the amount of games that go to a shootout.
"Sounds like changes could be coming for NHL 3-on-3 OT. Lots of discussion about reducing puck possession, potentially by trying to make «half court» rules on circling back in your own zone."
League executive Collin Campbell descried the NHL's goals with their next rules change to overtime.
"We haven't got to whether (overtime) should be longer or whether we should get rid of the shootout. We don't mind the format. The one thing we don't like, the one thing that teams have done on their own, players have done on their own, is decided that possession is key. You get those boot-back, kick-backs all the time. Sometimes overtimes get going, but until then, sometimes they don't want to give the puck up from opening faceoff."

BCHL Changes Overtime Rules, Setting Example For NHL

As Campbell noted, the league has not decided whether or not overtime should be longer. However, one junior league is proving that extending the extra frame might be good for the game. The BCHL, the highest Junior A league in British Columbia, extended overtime from five to ten minutes this season and the results speak for themselves.
Friedman on 32TP: "Someone reached out from the BCHL to me and they said that this year, they pointed out from this year, they went to 3-on-3 for 10 mins and the percentage of games gone to a shootout dropped from 41 to 14"
At the end of the day, reducing the significance the shootout should be the NHL's goal with any rules change. While the league is ultimately about entertainment, it has been widely accepted for years that the shootout is not a fair way to determine games. Friedman continued by stating that the 10 minute overtime frame may very well be a solution the NHL should adopt.
Cont'd: "I actually think that might be the answer, is to go to 10 mins of 3-on-3... What you really see happening is you can't shorten the bench as much as you do in 5 mins, you have to go deeper into your group than you do in a 5 mins OT cause guys get tired"
