According to reports the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks are in the intense stages of trade negotiation with the Canucks sending forward Conor Garland to the Penguins as the centrepiece of the deal.

The two teams are working on a blockbuster trade

The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly looking to trade winger Conor Garland to the Pittsburgh Penguins, via the gossip website Hockeybuzz. There are rumours that additional players are also engaged, but as of right now, no names have been revealed.
"All I know at this point; the Penguins REALLY like Conor Garland....Both teams could use some help on the D-end, which I admit makes them appear to be odd trade partners.. however, I am supposed to get some clarity as to what the Canucks want by mid-afternoon...."

Although the Penguins and Canucks are unlikely trading partners, they could be able to gain from each team's situation. While the Penguins are adamant about making a postseason run this year, the Canucks have apparently been attempting to move on from Garland for some time for cap space. While the Penguins view Garland as a top nine weapon for the club.

The Penguins Plan to Keep going All-In as Long as Crosby and Malkin are Still Around

With Kyle Dubas the Penguins remain in win-now mode, especially after the teams prized off-season acquisition in Erik Karlsson. The move signalled that the Penguins will continue to go for the Stanley Cup for as long as Crosby and Malkin are still playing in the league.
Nevertheless, with a 6-6 record after returning from a 3-0 California road swing, the squad is already out of a postseason position as they are presently ranked sixth in the Metro division. Assuming no players are leaving the squad, Garland would definitely improve the team.
Would Garland be sufficient to give the team the winning edge and guarantee a postseason berth? Maybe, but that's not likely. Between now and the deadline, the team may still take a variety of additional actions to strengthen other aspects of their game.
